How to Use a TENS Period Pain Relief Device?

If you’re someone who suffers from intense menstrual cramps, you may be wondering if a TENS device could help provide relief. TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) is a pain relief method that uses small, electricity-provoking pulses to help reduce pain signals going to the brain.

Some people find TENS period relief devices helpful for alleviating period pain, while others find them ineffective. If you’re interested in trying out a TENS device for yourself, this article will show you how to use one.

Where to Put Tens Unit for Menstrual Cramps

Before we get started, it is important to note that this is a general guide on how to use a TENS device. These devices are small and lightweight, so you can use them while going about your day. However, always be sure to read the specific instructions that come with your device to ensure proper and safe usage.

1. Positioning the pads

Upon opening your TENS system, you will see a control unit connected to a number of wires. These wires are connected to adhesive pads (often called “electrodes”) that will be placed on your skin.

To position, the pads, start by placing one on either side of your lower back, the abdomen, or the area of pain. If your device has four pads, you can place the remaining two on the inside of each thigh, also near the waistline.

If you’re not sure where to place the pads, consult the instructions that came with your device or ask a medical professional for guidance.

2. Turning it on and adjusting the strength

Once the pads are in place, it’s time to turn on your device. Most TENS units will have a power button and an intensity dial. To begin, start with the lowest setting and gradually increase the intensity until you feel a comfortable “tingling” sensation.

If the pulses are too strong, simply turn down the intensity. Remember, you should only feel a tingling sensation – if it begins to hurt, the setting is too high.

Ideally, it is recommended to start on a low setting and gradually increase the intensity as needed.

3. Wearing the device

Once you’ve found a comfortable setting, you can go about your day with the device in place. Most TENS units will have a built-in timer, so you don’t have to worry about overuse. However, it is important to check in on the device every few hours to make sure the pads are still securely in place and that the intensity level is still comfortable.

If you begin to feel pain relief, you can leave the device on for as long as necessary. When you’re ready to take it off, simply turn off the unit and remove the pads.

4. Skincare after use

Once you’ve removed the pads, it’s essential to take care of your skin. Gently clean the areas where the pads were placed with mild soap and water. Be sure to pat the area dry, do not rub as this can irritate the skin.

It is also recommended to apply a moisturiser to the area as the TENS unit can cause the skin to become dry.

If you notice any redness, swelling, or irritation after using the device, consult a medical professional immediately.

5. Charging your menstrual pain device

TENS units typically come with a charging cord that can be plugged into a USB port or standard outlet. When the control unit is not in use, be sure to charge it, so it’s ready for the next time you need pain relief.

Most devices will have an indicator light that will let you know when it’s fully charged. Consult your device’s instructions to learn more about charging.

6. Looking after the period pain relief device

When you’re not using your TENS device, be sure to store it in a safe and dry place. Many units come with a carrying case that can be used for storage.

It is also important to clean your device on a regular basis. Wipe down the control unit with a damp cloth, and do not use any harsh chemicals or cleaners as this can damage the unit. The electrodes can also be cleaned with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or debris before each use.

Choosing the Right TENS unit for Period Pain

There are many different types and brands of TENS units on the market. When choosing a device, it’s essential to consider your specific needs and pain relief goals. It’s also important to consider the pads that come with the device. Some units come with reusable pads that can be washed and reused, while others have disposable pads that need to be replaced after each use.

  1. I would like to turn off the 15 minute cycle feature, which cuts out the TENS machine while I am using it. How do I do that?

    1. Hello Chloe,
The device is self-programmed for 15 minutes, after which you might start feeling the relief. If you feel the need to use it again immediately, you can go for a second session right after.
